I’m Lucky. I Get to do
What I Love.

Joel Centano is

An (ahem, award-winning) freelance content creator and editorial manager focusing on sustainability, sustainable travel, education, and philanthropy. In a past life, I served a 15-year tenure at Virtuoso as the chief/managing editor of Virtuoso Traveler, a print and digital magazine meant to inspire meaningful, sustainable travel. Favorite photo and writing assignments have taken me to Kenya with Micato Safaris to report on conscientious providers that help protect wildlife and local cultures, the Galápagos for an eco-adventure with Lindblad Expeditions, and Montana to cover a conservation-centric family stay at The Ranch at Rock Creek.

Joel Centano Has

Experience as a writer, photographer, editor, content manager, and project manager for a diversity of genres and platforms (research institute reports, industry publications, editorial magazines, marketing materials, websites, blogs, email newsletters, social media). I have a dual degree in English and Communication from the University of New Hampshire; have dabbled in design classes; and have learned cool copyediting symbols (and more) in the Editing Program at the University of Washington.

Joel Centano is also

The word of the day; Love in the Time of Cholera; the Boston Celtics;
60 Minutes; serial commas; most any song from Bob Dylan (or The National, or Aimee Mann); a camera in hand and the feeling of being somewhere new (hint); any film where boxing serves as a metaphor for life (yes, even Rocky); Lagavulin 16; Jeopardy! (every night, unless I’m traveling); playing tennis until they turn out the lights; cacti for their anomalous aesthetic but also for their ability to adapt and thrive in odd environments; tropical plants for similar reasons; my family, and everything they’ve given me; and pit bull terriers, especially our late, great Audrey-girl.
